WEEK #8 - Sungai Plan, East Malaysia

Hello to the World!

This week was so crazy but great at the same time!! I don't have much time, but will share some great experiences we had this week. I am still having problems uploading the photos, so hopefully I can figure something out soon!

This Wednesday, Elder Christofferson came to the mission!! He is ANOTHER Apostle of Jesus Christ! What special and sacred experiences I have seen this week! He went to Singapore, and we skyped in from Miri, a city in East Malaysia. It was hard to get a good connection, but this is what I got! Someone asked, "How can we experience the blessings of the Temple, even though we are so far away? To which He replied, "Keep the Sabbath Day holy, and you will feel the Spirit comparable to the Temple!" Really cool! I encourage all to truly understand the Sabbath. Try your best to honor the Sabbath by taking a break from the world! Your phone, the movies, the shopping, all can wait. Make the Sabbath Day His day. You will experience greater spiritual nourishment and direction in your life! Elder Christofferson also said, "Come to love your service to God. If you love evil you will serve evil. If you love good you will serve good!" No one is predestined to have less! Anyone who strives to choose the right will receive the blessings of Heaven!

What a remarkable experience!
Bagged ice cream and the Book of Mormon, what else could we possibly need? :)

On Thursday, we taught Brother George, who is a returning less active, meaning he hasn't gone to church in a long time, but now is coming back! We taught Him about the Doctrine of Christ, found in 2 Nephi chapter 31. Through Christ, we can be made whole!

On Sunday, we went to District Conference! That is where the members of the Church from different areas gather for one big Sunday service! We were privileged to have Elder Meurs, of the Seventy come and visit us! In the Bible, we read that the Lord sent out "other seventy" to strengthen His Church, just like the 12 Apostles. (Luke 10:1-17). So, because we believe to be the restored Church of Christ, there are also 70 leaders that represent the Church worldwide! Elder Meurs spoke about Sacrament last General Conference, the one with the Australian accent :) He is a really humble and spiritual person. I know He has been called of God! He encouraged the missionaries to think in this way: "My mission belongs to Him, because I love Him: to make each day His, not mine." I encourage everyone to make each day, a day to the Lord! We truly cannot last in this world by being Sunday Christians. Being called Christians, gives us an opportunity to bear His name for the rest of our lives. What an honor.

Later in the week we went to visit Sister Shera, who is a member of the church in our area. Elder Chungh, my companion had a prompting, or a thought from God, that we should go visit Brother Gunnong, a member who hasn't come to church in a long time. But we didn't know where He lived. Turns out He lives ACROSS THE STREET from Sister Shera. We were able to visit Him and teach Him and His family about the importance of Church. We go to church, not to visit with friends and make it a social hour. While that is a benefit, we go to church to: receive revelation (inspiration) from God about how we can live better lives, we receive a remission of our sins (meaning we are forgiven) through the sacrament. Eating the bread and drinking the water remind us about our Savior's sacrifice, and we recommit for the following week to become more like Him. BTW, this was all in Malay. My companion said most of it, and I couldn't really understand what they said. Afterwards I looked at my companion and said that I felt they didn't care about church and they didn't look interested in coming back. He told me, "that was one of the most powerful lessons I have ever been in." He explained to me that they all had their excuses for not coming to church at the beginning of the lesson. But afterwards, the mother was in tears and told us she felt peace when we walked in. That is the power of the Holy Ghost. The Father explained to us that He had a dream the previous night. Someone put their hand on his shoulder, and told Him He needed to come back to church. He didn't know who it was though! And then the next day, we showed up at his house. They said it was a miracle, and I testify we were sent by Heavenly Father to Brother Gunnong and His family. So cool!!

Another cool story: We were teaching Francis, our investigator, at Henry's house. We taught the Restoration: how Christ established a church, is was lost because of the wickedness of the people, but is now back on the earth again through the Prophet Joseph Smith! When we began talking about the Apostasy, meaning when the people began to change and reject Christ's teaching, all the electricity in the house completely shut off. Nothing was working, and we are in Malaysia, so it would take a long time for it to come back on again. We decided to keep teaching in the dark. I kid you not, as soon as we said Joseph Smith's name, the power came back on. How can anyone deny that that was the hand of the Lord? I felt the Spirit so strong, and knew that God was helping us explain the Restoration haha. I testify that this Church is true. If for an instant I doubted its validity, I would pack up my bags and go home. But that is not the case. It will never be the case. This is God's work. This is the work of salvation. It is my greatest honor to bear the Saviors name, and stand as a witness of His true Church

ADDITIONS by the MOM...
McKayd is in Sungai Plan which is part of the city of Bintulu. Which is in EAST Malaysia.

Here are a few interesting things he has shared with us that you would enjoy too...

"Singapore is very different!! I am probably going to stay in Malaysia for the majority of my mission though! The Singapore part is more Chinese and English speaking missionaries. Guess what. I will tell you one thing that is different: WE DON'T HAVE TOILET PAPER! Yah, just thing about that for a second haha. We use a hose! The water shoots out and it gets everywhere. Pretty gross haha."
"Mom, I will never question your food again"
"We have a MILLION lizards in our house and they poop everywhere!! I went to trap one and accidentally cut off its tail. The tail was still moving for three minutes aaaahaha. What else do you want to know? Everyone is really poor and people over here TEASE SO MUCH!!! So "selamat pagi" is "good morning", but "selamat petang" is "good evening". They always say that to me to confuse me. And they say "orang putai" which means "white boy". fun fun haha"

WEEK #7 - in MALAYSIA!

I'm in Malaysia!!

Hello everyone!

This week has gone by really fast! I can't remember much honestly! Where did I leave off.... So after P-day on Friday, we just packed and packed and packed. They encouraged us to try and pack 3 months worth of stuff into a 50 pound suitcase. Crazy, I know! My parents were probably alarmed when I sent home a package full of random clothes and accessories haha.

I managed to finish packing, Monday morning, just 30 minutes before we were supposed to leave!

On Sunday, I somehow got wrapped into a special musical number for sacrament meeting. Sacrament meeting is the hour of church that speeches are given, and the sacrament (aka communion) is passed to the congregation. It is a time that we remember Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us, and renew or recommit to Him for the next week! Hymns or spiritual music is played to increase the Spirit that is felt there. A couple of other Elders and I sang "How Great Thou Art," which is Papa's favorite hymn. I even had a solo in it, which was crazy scary. But I felt like the Spirit was able to be there during the song, and I was grateful to have been given the opportunity!

For the Sunday night devotional, Elder M. Russell Ballard came!!! He is also an Apostle for our church, which is a really sacred honor to have been in his presence. We talked about Enduring to the end. Enduring to the end means that once you have been baptized and confirmed a member of the church, you try your hardest to do your best for the rest of your life! When we commit to following Jesus Christ and trying to live His gospel, it is a lifetime commitment. Enduring to the end establishes a culture of righteousness: where choosing the right becomes a natural habit! When we endure to the end, we enjoy to the end!

Elder Ballard encourages us to be more "reverently appreciative" of Jesus Christ. How reverently do we use His name? Do our actions match His? If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do? I encourage us all, regardless of our differing faiths, to live a better life, and to be a better person! Life is much happier that way.

 (picture of the missionaries leaving!)

We said goodbye to Utah as we journeyed on our 20 or so hour flight!

Here are some pictures of the area!

I have a ton more pictures to send, however the computers over here are not very fast haha. So maybe next week I can figure something out!

My companions name is Elder Chungh, and He is a full-blown native! He hardly speaks English, but is fluent in Malay, which is exactly what I wanted!! I had been praying for a companion who will help me become the missionary I am suppose to be. Because He only speaks Malay, and is a really obedient missionary, I truly have been blessed.

The area which we are serving is called TJK. The actual name is too complicated for me to remember it haha. I am in West Malaysia! TJK has been "white-washed," meaning that two missionaries go to an area that both have never been to before. So, they have no idea where the members of the church are, and where everything is. It takes some getting use to.

I have had some interesting food in the past couple of days. Some chicken skin soup, and fish patties. Those of you who know, I can eat fish as long as it doesn't taste like fish. Makes sense, right? Well, the fish patties tasted like fish. It was a humbling experience.

We have a recent convert to the church named Harry. He brought a friend over to hear our message, and we taught Him about the Restoration!

The Restoration occurred when the Prophet Joseph Smith restored, or brought back the church that Christ had established on the earth. Christ's church was lost due to the wickedness of the people, but what great joy to we have, to know that His pure and truthful church is once back on the earth! Francis (Harry's friend), received it well, and went to church with us!

I had the opportunity to speak in Church!! It was a sacred opportunity to talk about Jesus Christ in a completely different language. The members are very humble and great to work with! I can't understand a word that anyone is saying, nevertheless I know that serving a mission is the right thing for me, and I am called of God to spread the gospel to the people of Malaysia!!

Love you all, and have a great week!!!

WEEK #6 - MTC

Tiga Hari! (3 days left!!!)

Hello everyone!!

If anyone wants to know, being a missionary is the best thing ever!! You get to eat drink and sleep the gospel! Haha.

Being a missionary is like getting the golden mushroom on mario cart! You just get to go crazy fast and have a blast!!

Anyways, this week was great! It was my LAST full week of the MTC, I leave Monday! I don't have much time, so I will keep this long and sweet! ;)

This week we did an ENGLISH FAST!! That means we were not allowed to speak a word of English to anyone, even if they didn't speak our language!! It was really hard and I got a huge headache from it, but it improved my speaking ability a ton! Check out our official declaration!

So on Sunday, there was a devotional given by the daughter of Elder Oaks!! Elder Oaks is an Apostle for our church, and is one of twelve, just like when Christ was on the earth, who guides the church and is an official Apostle of Jesus Christ!

After Sunday devotionals, we normally are allowed to watch either a church movie, or a general conference talk! (A speech that an Apostle or other leaders from our church give semiannually). After the devotional, a member of the MTC Council announced that all missionaries were advised to watch "The Character of Christ" by Elder Bednar, another Apostle of our church. If you remember, I watched that my first Sunday! But, it changed my life, so I was excited to watch it again! I learned a lot of new things too!! For us to turn outward and help other people, rather than turn inward and help ourselves, is ONLY possible with Christ's help. The only antidote for a personal bad day, is to help someone else have a good day!! That is so simple and easy!! After the devotional, the MTC President, President Martino, said that there was a special guest for us tonight. Guess who walks in? ELDER BEDNAR AND HIS WIFE!!!!! Everyone was so excited, and a wave of emotion just swept through the audience of missionaries! This emotion was different from the emotion that comes from a movie star walking in. It was reverent, and sacred. Just imagine being able to meet Peter, James, or John! How would you feel? I have a firm testimony of modern-day Prophets and Apostles, and being able to see Elder Bednar and His wife was a sacred moment. We were able to ask Him questions, and get more guidance about how to help others come unto Christ!

Today I got to go to the Temple one last time!! The Temple is truly the House of the Lord, and its presence on earth is evidence of God's presence on earth!!

The rest of the week was amazing!! When I put my trust in the Lord, rather than the language, I find spiritual success! The language is really coming along, and I am so excited to leave for Malaysia on Monday!! We fly to LA from Salt Lake City, and then from LA to Hong Kong! We will then skip a day of our lives, and arrive in Singapore Wednesday morning haha. 36 hours of flying!

The next email I write will be in SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA!!! So stay in tune!!

The lasting peace and joy I feel from the gospel, is evidence of an everlasting love, a pure love, that comes our Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ. I love this gospel, and can't wait to help others come to love it to!

Jumpa lagi kemudian Hari Isnin di Singapore! Talk to you next Monday in Singapore!!

1. Someone mixed me up! But thanks for the package anyways!!

2. My Aunt Mishaun made this for me! It is SOOOOO cool!! She is the best, it is a missionary apron!!

3. His name is McKayd too!! (Well, spelled McCade)

WEEK #5 - MTC

Hai everyone!!

This week was just outstanding!! I really love the MTC, and simply feel God's presence here all the time! It truly is a special place.

The week began with an interesting start! I was flossing my bottom teeth (like a good boy) with the weird floss for the permanent retainer. my floss got stuck in the bar of my permanent retainer and I went to take it off, but half of my retainer popped off!! I had to call my branch president (an adult who presides and leads a specific group of elders) who happened to be a dentist. He told me to just rip it off and wait to get a new one...so I did! It was a heroic night! So I now have a top and bottom removable retainer :) We got to leave the MTC for a little bit, so if anyone is wondering what the world is like outside of the MTC, here is a pic!

I know I know, doesn't the outside world look SO COOL?? Just kidding ;)

We taught our investigator Kristina this week! She had her father die, so we felt strongly about teaching her the Plan of Salvation (God's plan for us). Have you ever wondered where you were before you came to earth, what the purpose of this life is, or what is going to happen to us when we die? I am sure most of you have had these questions. I am so grateful to know that the scriptures teach that we lived with God before we came to earth! How cool is that? There is a purpose for this life. God wants us to me more than just good people. When we learn and live the gospel of Jesus Christ, we will be happier than we ever have or will be without it! I know that we will live with God again after we die! Every single person will live again, good or bad!

1 Corinthians 15 verse 22 states, "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

We reassured Kristina that she WILL see her father again if she chooses to follow Jesus Christ and live His gospel! I know of no greater thought: We can live with our families forever! It brings hope to hardships, and trust during trials. I am so grateful for my siblings and family! We are not the perfect family by any means, but we have an eternity to get there! :)

The gospel topic for sunday was Baptism and Receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost! When we are baptized, it has to be with the right authority. If we have faith and believe in Jesus Christ, we can be cleansed from our sins! This makes us able to live with God again like I mentioned previously!

In the Book of Mormon on page 120, we read in Jacob chapter 2 verse 18: "But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God." Later in the Book of Mormon, the Savior adds one word to this verse that changes it entirely! He says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God..." (3 Nephi 13: 33, pg. 435)

See the crucial word? FIRST! What do you put first in your life?

Heavenly Father is so merciful to us! We offer Him a life of mistakes and sins, and He offers us a new and cleansed life after we are baptized.

After we are baptized, we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost! The Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit) is a personage of Spirit, and has been sent by God and Jesus Christ to help us do good and make right choices. When you gave service to someone, how did you feel? When you read from the scriptures, what did you feel? When I do good things, I feel good! Simple, right? Those good feelings come from the Holy Ghost, and He confirms to me that what I am doing is right.

Feeling the Holy Ghost is different from receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost. When we receive Him, we are promised that He is our constant companion! The Holy Ghost will guide us in all walks of life, giving us inspiration and power to choose the right! It is one of the most sacred gifts Heavenly Father has given us, and can only be received through the proper authority (known as the Priesthood) from God. Let me know if that didn't make sense, I'd love to explain it to you!

This week we got to be tour guides for the MTC! The MTC is holding an open house for the entire campus, so we directed people where to go, and helped them have a good experience! Check out the new learning and instruction rooms!!
Image result for pictures of the new provo mtc finished

They also took a picture of all the missionaries at the MTC, and I found myself!!

We had Sister Jean B. Bingham, the General Relief Society President speak on Tuesday! I liked the quote: "Knowing who you are changes what you do." We are children of God! He knows us perfectly. I encourage us all to change what is wrong in our lives, and choose the right!!

Love you all, jumpa lagi bagi kemudian hari Jumaat!! ( see ya later until next Friday!!)

(This is a sack breakfast I got from my mom. Felt like I needed to recreate some memories!!)

PS - This is McKayds mom. I did NOT make him a sack breakfast. He made that for himself by himself. I love his little heart to himself!!!)
