WEEK #12 - 8 Hour Bus Rides = 8 Hour Headaches

Nama Berita! (How are you, but in Ibon)

How has life been in America for y'all?

This week was great. We had a Branch activity at the beach! Our day consisted of BBQing, bola (soccer), and eating! The members of the Church here are really generous, whether it's the amount of food they bring, the unique variety of foods brought, or the requested amount of food intake for the missionaries. This week was a unique one! We had chicken, noodles, vegetables, and pork! This time it wasn't pork lung, and instead of asking where the meat came from, I got to see it for myself.
Anyone want some pig head?? :) Sorry for the picture haha.

Tuesday and Wednesday we had zone conference and interviews! Every three months, missionaries around the mission get to have an interview with the Mission President and His wife. We get to check up on how we are doing, and talk about any concerns or challenges we may be facing. We are also trained on specific gospel topics in order to be more effective missionaries! It was in Miri, which is a four hour bus ride there and back. Imagine the damage done with roads under construction too!

In my interview, I expressed to President Simmons I want to be changed positively by my mission. Like I've said before, I don't want my family to recognize me when I come home! His reply was simple but very profound too. He said, "If you are doing the right thing, change will happen." I think that applies in all of our lives! If you feel like you want to change something in your life, just choose the right! Try a little harder, to be a little better each day. This is why Heavenly Father gave us agency. Agency is also known as free will. You get to choose and think what you want, and I can do the same. Agency isn't just the ability to choose right and wrong, but the ability to choose right when there is wrong. That is how we use our agency righteously!

During zone conference we were able to have a testimony meeting. I shared my beliefs about how sacred this calling is! We are ministering to the very people that Jesus Christ would minister if He Himself were on the earth.

A worker at the store gave me this for free. Waaaaa?

So very grateful for everyone's support! Keep up the good work!

***ADDITIONS FROM THE MOM***
MCKAYD: "We are in a gaming room emailing haha. There is no such thing as a library."
Q: "What did you eat for breakfast today?"
MCKAYD: "I had cereal haha. Cereal is really expensive out here. I've been doing my best to be healthy with vegetables and fruit. Also very expensive. Give me some things I can cook haha. Like LETTUCE WRAPS!"
Q: "Do you wear your slides inside your apt so you don't step on lizard poo"
MCKAYD: "Yes slides. But smells gross because of feet!"
Q: "Do you hand out Books of Mormon"
MCKAYD: "So normally, we don't really hand out Books of Mormon unless they are very interested in the contact. Normally we give it to them in the first lesson. We are NOT allowed to talk to Muslims about any of it! It is hard to recognize who is who, so my trainer is always telling me to not talk to people because they are Muslim. My trainer and I mainly talk to Malay to each other, but when he needs to explain something to me its in english. Or when we both forget haha."
Q: "What is your favorite food so far?"
MCKAYD: favorite food has not been found yet! haha. All they eat over here is carbs. Bread, rice, and noodles haha. Worse food is fish. I have avoided it like the plague. Still haven't had it at a members house so that is exciting (otherwise he wouldn't be able to refuse and have to eat it)."
"There are a million dogs, no birds. There is a lizard called Baiwik. People go hunt it and eat it. Look it up! I asked so many people but there are no animals here with antlers. Such a bummer!"

WEEK #11 - The Wonders of Malaysia

Hello everyone!! Apa Khabar!

This week was so great. This week, Martha and her family fed us! She made some great curry, and babi (pig). The pork was a little chewy and had a lot of holes in it. I asked Martha what part of the pig the meat came from (big mistake), and she said it was PIG LUNG! Maybe that's why it was a little chewy with some air holes in it! Hey mom, wanna cook that for the fam? It would really be a sign of your appreciation for the Malaysian culture ;)
A HUGE leaf!
...The becoming of an Ibon Indian

On Wednesday, we taught Brother Bert the Restoration. We taught that we are children of God, and He is our loving Heavenly Father. As we shared Joseph's Smith experience, the Spirit was so strong. It was the strongest, warmest, most heavenly feeling I have ever felt in my heart. I know the Spirit bore strong testimony of that remarkable event.

Brother Bert and his brother!

We headed over to Sister Sena's house, the Relief Society President for our Branch. We asked if she had read the Book of Mormon that day, and she said she had not. One of my favorite quotes popped into my head: "If we are too busy to read and pray everyday, then God made our lives busier then He ever intended them to be." We know Heavenly Father is perfect, so He has given us all the time in the world to read and pray, but do we give God time to change our lives? She had been having some heart problems, so we had the opportunity of giving her a blessing. I only know a little bit of malay, but I know Heavenly Father spoke to her directly!

Thursday was quite interesting. We got a call from someone the missionaries had contacted a long time ago. She and her mother are crazy ladies. She was legitimately crazy. She called to tell us that her mother was trying to kill their cat! We tried calming her down and reassuring her that everything was going to be ok, but we could hear the mother screaming in the background. The daughter gave the phone to her crazy mom. We told her to stop trying to kill the cat! She said, "I'm going to kill the cat because it is trying to turn me yellow!" The call dropped after that. It was very amusing yet alarming too haha.

We met Brother Michael on Friday. He was the person that approached us because he wanted to learn more. We shared with him the message of the Restoration. He lives in a shack that he built himself. It is really humbling to see what great faith people have in such poor circumstances. It makes me wonder how often I complain about the room being too hot, or the shower being too cold, when people live in shacks with smiles on their faces. During the middle of the lesson, it began to rain really hard. He has a metal roof, so we were practically shouting so that he could hear us. We asked him to pray to know if the church was true, and during the prayer the rain stopped. We could hear his sincere pleading to know. After the prayer, the rain picked back up again and we got soaked on the way home :)

On Saturday we taught Brother Bert and his brother about the Plan of Salvation. Knowing about the Plan of Salvation has given me greater hope of the love of God than anything else. We helped them realize how simple the Plan is! We lived with God before this life. During this life we should do all we can to live the gospel. Because of Jesus Christ, we can live with God again. So simple! Afterwards we taught mission prep class for the youth in the TJK and Sungai Plan Branches. Look at this beautiful sight!

On Sunday, Elder and Sister Magelby, the Senior Couples for West Malaysia visited our Branch. You don't have to be young to serve a mission! If an elderly couple wants to serve a mission, they can be senior couples, and be called to serve another mission! My Grandparents have served over 7 missions, to which I am eternally grateful. The last mission they served was in Boston! They helped out with Uploading old documents for Family History! If anyone is interested in learning more about their family and ancestors, go to www.familysearch.org, and it will take you through a world of documents and stories about your ancestors! Ask me or any Mormon fellow around you if you have any questions!

I would like to share two thoughts from studies this week:

2 Nephi 3:13 says that: "And out of weaknesses he shall be made strong." I know love weaknesses! Weaknesses are just ways to know what you can do to be more Christ-like! For example, if you are really impatient, that is a weakness of yours. But because of that weakness, you know exactly what to work on, so that you can become more like Christ!

2 Nephi 2: 8 shares a message about Jesus Christ and His Atonement. It says, "no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah." What is the difference between the merits, mercy, and the grace of Jesus Christ? After some fervent prayer and cross referencing, here is the conclusion for me at least: We are worthy for salvation through His merits, salvation is achievable through His mercy, and by his grace salvation is possible.

I am so grateful for the trust that Heavenly Father has given me to serve a mission! Thanks for all the support and love everyone in my life has given me. I love you all, and have a wonderful week. Tell me about things going on in your life too. I can't be the only one talking :)

Love Elder McKayd LaRose

***ADDITIONS FROM THE MOM***
This week we were sent the following pix and email from someone in Malaysia talking about McKayd. It said -
"Hyee I'm from Malaysia, Saya bergambar dengan anak sister, elder larose, dia sangat hebat, dan sangat nakal, dan dia sangat hebat bila mengajar orang, elder larose kirim salam kepada keluarga kamu, dia rindu kamu, dia sayang kamu...  Ahahah.  ðŸ˜€"

2:15am – MCKAYD – “Mother you are making no sense right now haha. Read what you said to me haha”

Apprently this time difference is going to be humorous.

WEEK #10 - When a Dog Becomes a Missionary's Worst Nightmare

Hello friends and family!

This week was full of fun and faith!

I was informed of being the "Housing Leader" for my District, so I am the mom of the bunch! Having 4 missionaries living in the same house is another world- in both good and bad ways :)

On Tuesday, we had our first dinner appointment with the members, just four weeks since I have been here! Normally as missionaries, the members of the church in the area that you are serving invite you over for dinner. We get to know the members and share a spiritual thought with them. It is very kind for members across the world to feed the missionaries, so thank you to all who do that! You don't even have to be a member to invite the missionaries over for dinner, because we are "selalu lapar" (always hungry). From this visit with the Branch President and his wife, I noticed food in Malaysia is very different than food in America. It doesn't seem real until you try it! They fed us chicken wings (you can take that literally), hot dogs (at least that what it looked like), an onion-chili boiled egg, a weird soggy green Ibon traditional vegetable, with some rice rice and more rice! Yes, I did pray for help :) The Gaadong family had also invited another member over, who happened to be deaf. Now I know why he couldn't hear my silent pleadings for help! In fact, everytime I managed to finish something on my plate, the deaf member would be such a gentleman and scoop up another helping for me. But I did manage to survive, until they passed around a bowl of water. My companion explained that I dip my fingers into the water, and then eat what is ever on the plate with your hands. You would wash your hands in the bowl whenever your fingers got dirty again. The bowl kept being passed around and anxious eyes beckoned me to dip my fingers into the now water + the remains of other's food in the bowl. The chicken was the most fearful part. I could survive picking at the bone for meat with my fingers. I am not a very good germ sharer. Everyone just said, "seperti Elder Chngh," which means "do it like Elder Chngh." I looked over to see the chicken wing in his mouth and gnawing on whatever could be considered meat. Very foreign to me :D But still grateful for that experience!

Afterwards we were able to share a thought from Moroni 7:47, which talks about the pure love of Christ. When the natural man inside us wants to turn inward, Christ's pure love is the reason we turn outward. As we were teaching another family, I couldn't understand a word they were saying. From the Spirit, I received a clear and distinct thought: love them. That was all I needed to do! If you want a happier life, if you want God to forgive you, if you want others to appreciate you, gain the pure love of Christ. My mother is a very special example of that love! Thanks mom :)

Our area is very big, so we wanted to explore it a little! There is an area called SOP, which is government owned land, but very poor people have build shacks and houses out of wood and are living there. So when two people show up in dress attire and name tags, what do you think happened? All the dogs came barking at us and I saw everyone just scrambling to get into their houses and shut the doors and windows. They must've thought we were some FBI or government officials haha. Later that night we were told that Brother Francis, our investigator, does not want to meet with us again. He said his mother didn't want him to learn. Ibon tradition is very into worshiping idols and smoking haha. We are going to try and help them understand how much the Savior can help them!

Brother Henry was having a lot of stress with debt. We helped him find answers through the Book of Mormon. We read with him Alma 7 (which talks about the Savior's Atonement), and Ether 12 (how we can overcome weaknesses with faith and humility). Wonderful chapters, I encourage you all to read them!

Thursday was pretty cool! We were approached by someone on a motorcycle and he said, "what is your names?" Apparently he had been taught by the missionaries before, but moved and somehow lost contact with them. He wants to learn again! What a miracle. He just beamed with light and excitement. To get back to our house, we had to cross a 45ft river on three big tree trunks that had been placed over the river. We had to carry our bikes across the river too. It was so cool! The path was super muddy and we both got knee deep in mud. I love Malaysia!

Saturday was a day full of miracles! In the morning we were able to teach Bert. Bert was a previous investigator, who lost contact with missionaries after moving far away for work. Heavenly Father changed his life. He stopped drinking, doing drugs, being in gangs, and flunking school. The only thing he couldn't do was stop smoking. Now he is back in town and we get to teach him! We committed him that day, to never touch a cigarette again. In some circumstances, when we truly have faith, God will help us with any righteous desire we have! He promised to be baptized on October 28th! Then in the evening, we were able to teach Brother Mattius and his friend Terun, who were referrals from the Miri Sister Missionaries. A referral means that someone was approached by missionaries, and said they want to be taught, but they live in a different area then they were contacted. So Mattius and Terun were contacted in Miri, but lives in our area, so we teach them! In the first lesson, we talked about the Restoration. We talked about baptism, and he said, "Ya, I was already baptized in my church, so I am saved!" We then explained that Jesus Christ and His Apostles had the proper authority and power to perform ordinances such as baptism. This power and authority is called the Priesthood. But we know that Christ and His apostles were rejected, and killed. The Priesthood was lost from the earth and people began to be very wicked. After the Priesthood was lost, the time became known as the Dark Ages. Christ's true church was changed and doctrines were altered. There were many good people on the earth who sought for the truth, but could not find the fullness of the truth. Because of the prophet Joseph Smith, the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored, along with the proper authority to perform ordinances. Baptism needs to be done through God's approval and power. After explaining this, both Mattius and Terun said, "So when can we be baptized?" It was so cool and special! A day of miracles for sure.

On Sunday, we went to church! It is a wonderful time to receive guidance and direction, and to "start over" for the week! As we were biking, I saw a man standing by the side of the road. We went to go talk to him. When I pulled up beside him, I went to put my food down on the road. Turns out, it was a mud puddle. I did my best to jump over it, (my best wasn't good enough), and I landed in the puddle. There was more mud at the bottom of the puddle, so my planting foot slipped under me and I did some variation of the splits. It was so embarrassing haha. The man ended up wanting to learn more. I wasn't sure if he wanted to learn more or just felt bad for the mess I made of myself haha.

This morning, I looked outside to see if it was raining. I saw one of my nice church shoes, but couldn't find the other one. I saw it at the other end of the yard. Here is a photo of the crime scene and the culprit in the background...

Here are some facts about Malaysia:

1. It is Malaysia tradition that shoes are bad luck. Every time we go into a members house, we have to take our shoes off. Even in businesses, we have to take our shoes off. So right now I am emailing in an internet business barefoot :D
2. No one has chairs. Everyone sits on the ground, criss-cross apple sauce. It looked comfy, until you are sitting in that position for 45 minutes! I always feel like an 80 year old man trying to stand up after sitting like that haha.
3. It rains ALL the time here. The people here say if you are wet at all, no one will let you into their house.
4. There are truly ants in our pants! There are a million ants in houses, including ours. And flies too. We looking inside the trash to see maggots everywhere! (You should be glad I didn't take a picture).
5. No one here has a last name! It is always something like: "Michael anak George." Anak just means "the child of." George would be Michael's father!
6. Instead of mice and mice poop, we have lizards and lizard poop.
7. People drink something called "Milo." It is basically water with a couple pinches of hot chocolate mix. It is boiling hot like hot chocolate too! So Coach Vedroni, if you want your wrestlers to excel this year, I'd encourage you to train them in Malaysia (100% humidity and 95 degrees) while drinking Milo!
8. Malaysia doesn't have too good of water. By that I mean they have tapeworms in their water, so everything has to be boiled. When I get cold water from a restaurant or member I have a mini heart attack.

If anyone has any questions or how I can improve my emails, let me know and I will include them in the next email!

WEEK #9 - Patience with Mud, Moonlight and Malaysia

WEEK #9 - Patience with Mud, Moonlight and Malaysia.
LOCATION: Sungai Plan, East Malaysia (near Bintulu)

Hello Hello everyone!!

What a week. After emailing last week we got to deep clean the house!! This is where I began to use my Dad's cleaning skills and my mom's cheerful attitude to accomplish the 6 hours of cleaning! I am now (more than ever) grateful for my parent's willingness to keep the house clean, in order for the Spirit to dwell in our home! I truly believe if we clean our lives up, both spiritually and physically, the Lord can do wonders among us! So siblings, clean your room. Please and thank you :)

We had Family Home Evening as a Branch Monday night! In our church, we have been asked to reserve Monday night for spending time with family! We pray, read scriptures, share thoughts about the gospel, play games and eat treats! What could be better!?!! The Ibon tradition (a native tribe to Malaysia), gathers everyone outside of the home first to say a pray and share a spiritual thought...and THEN comes the feast :) We should always be fed spiritually before we are fed temporally! I was able to share a thought, in Moroni 10:32. It says:
"32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God."

So many times we hear people say that we are not perfect. But the truth is...we ARE perfect, with Christ! If we come unto Christ, meaning we strive to follow Him and His teachings, we will be perfected in Him!

People in Malaysia live in Long Houses. Go look it up it's so cool! The house is around 150 feet wide, with 50 or so rooms for people. The long house has a ginormous porch for all the villagers to sit on. So cool! (see picture)

(notice no shoes. They are removed when entering homes.)

Happy belated birthday to my awesome brother Kyler!! He headed to BYU this week and will be successful were ever he is! Love you brother, thank you for the example you have set for me and everyone else!

On Thursday, I had a good personal study! At the beginning of each day, we are given 3 hours to study: 1 hour of personal, 1 hour of companionship study (with the missionary assigned to you), and 1 hour of language study! Morning studies are a time for us to receive revelation and guidance for ourselves but more importantly our investigators!
PERLAYANAN DI MALAYSIA! - this is my Trainer

In the Book of Mormon we learn in chapter 8 of 1 Nephi about Lehi's vision. I mentioned Lehi's vision in my previous email, and how there is a tree called the tree of life, representing the love of God. There is an iron rod that leads to the tree of life, representing the word of God! If we continually read the scriptures and live the gospel, we can experience the fruits of God's love for us. Lehi also accounted in His vision that there "arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lost their way, that they wandered off and were lost." The midst of darkness represent satan's temptations. He tempted the people trying to get the the tree of life, and they were lost!

Now imagine this: How funny would it be to see someone trying to put out a bonfire with a mister? The mist could never quench the flames! So never let satan's mist of temptations quench the fire of your faith! Always stay strong and faithful :)

On Saturday, we went to visit a recent convert in our area! Their house was a 20 minute bike ride from ours. On the way over, I looked behind me to see if my companion was still there. When I turned back around there was a huge mud puddle to greet me. Everything got splashed, including my favorite tie! :( But it was a good laugh for the both of us!

The member pretty much lives in a shack! There is no water and no running electricity. We sat in the dark with a flashlight in the center. Spooky but truly an element in Malaysian culture!

On Sunday, we had fast and testimony meeting! Every month our church sets apart a church service for testimonies! Anyone from the congregation can come up to the front and share their beliefs and what they know to be true! I was able to go up and bear my testimony in Malay! Really powerful and spiritual! Just as a side note, EVERYONE loves to tease! One Sister said her name was Sister Rose, because mine was La-Rose. All the youth keep calling me "orang putih" (white person). I try by best to tease back with the phrases I know in Malay, and they just "kacow" (tease) me more. I love it haha!!

I wish you all a great week! I wish I could tell you all the stories and send all the pictures, but I will figure out a system sooner than later!

gembira untuk tulis kepada kamu semua lagi! (Happy to write to you all again!)

Love, Elder McKayd LaRose

ADDITIONS by the MOM:
“People can’t understand me and I can’t understand them because they talk too fast. They also all speak a language called Ibon, which has nothing to do with Malay, so that is fun! It’ humbling, but I really want to just have a good mission.”

"Computers are just really really really really reallllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I can go to the church and have the pictures upload for like a week hahahaha. It is so bad. I wish I could do a click and drop."

When asked what candy/treats McKayd wanted sent to him he said, "I want all the preservable American treats and snacks you could ever imagine hahaha. They have NOTHING here!! So the almond vanilla nature valley granola bars, twix and reeces and I DON'T KNOW I will think of more! haha"
