WEEK #50 - Singin' In Singapore

 Hey y'all! How's your week?

This week was great for us! On Monday we did a deep clean of our house. I mean like a DEEP Randy-LaRose-style cleaning. We took about 6 hours to do it. Look at all the stuff we threw away from past Elders living here! It felt so relieving.

On Tuesday we met with Brother Sibat, one of the current people we are teaching. We shared with Him about the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance. Right now, each of us are separated from the presence of God. God's goal for us is to live with Him again! He sent Jesus Christ to "atone" or pay for our sins, so that we can be worthy to live with God again. Through repentance, or sincere change, we can align our will with God's will. Brother Sibat said he feels something different every time he walks into the church or reads the Book of Mormon. We are excited he is beginning to recognize the feelings of the Holy Ghost.

That same night, we were heading to our next appointment when we were stopped on the street by a man. The first thing he said to us was, "Hello Mormons, I'm an atheist." Haha, as you could guess, the conversation after this statement didn't really go anywhere. He was tamel (from India) and had met with the Elders before. He had some strange ideas about the creation and how religion was started. We did our best to testify and then moved along. Not something you see everyday in Malaysia!

We flew into Singapore for Zone Conference on Wednesday. This is the last zone conference I will have with the Simmons! It was really sad. They finish their mission next Friday, and then the Rowleys take over!

For Zone Conference, the focus was effective planning and preparing. As a missionary, we need to have every hour of ever day filled with a useful aktivity. If you remember that previous email I sent about my missionary schedule, it looks like that about every day! We do studies, teach people (members and people who are interested), and we go try and talk with a lot of people! We have to plan for our days in an effective way in order to do the Lord's work right😊

President Simmons shared with us what he learned from personal study that day. He was studying in Jacob 5, which describes the allegory of the olive tree. He focused on the part that touches on pruning a tree. When a tree needs to be pruned, normally it's because there are too many branches. There is a large amount of fruit, but the quality thereof is low. Pruning allows the cutting away of dead branches and some live ones to allow the tree to produce less, but more quality fruit!

This is very relatable to our lives. Prioritization is key in having a solid direction in life. Too many focus points and tasks will leave one frustrated and overwhelmed. It has happened to me! Find what matters most and what works most. The quality of your life, work, family, testimony, etc will improve when you prune, prune, and prune!

After Zone conference, we did a skit night. We were separated into different groups. We acted out a story in the old testament, but it had to be a modern version. We got Moses's story! Moses wanted to leave the presence of Pharaoh so that the children of Israel could live in peace.

In Malaysia and Singapore, immigration customs are very strict! A lot of foreigners
are denied entrance just cause! Sometimes missionaries have trouble entering Malaysia because it is hard to believe we are just volunteers, and not working or schooling.

So, we reinacted the immigration customs! Haha. I walked up to the immigration office and they told me to go to immigration detention (again this is just a skit). 3 other missionaries were there. We were allowed one phone call. We decided to call "President Moses!" (pretending he was our mission president at the time). He walked up to the immigration officer and said, "Let my people stay!" It's hard to explain, but it was fun haha. Malaysia and Singapore are the best! They do a good job at keeping the country safe!

We had a testimony meeting for all the departing missionaries. During a testimony meeting, people can go up to the mic and share their feelings and experiences from their mission. There were a lot of missionaries finishing their mission, so it was powerful.

I had an experience during that testimony meeting that was very sacred. I realized that I needed to love people more, especially myself. I gave myself and others unrealistic expectations, assuming all the time of what God wants me to do. Here is a quote from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf: "My dear friends and fellow priesthood holders, if Jesus Christ were to sit down with us and ask for an accounting of our stewardship, I am not sure He would focus much on programs and statistics. What the Savior would want to know is the condition of our heart. He would want to know how we show our love to our spouse and family, and how we lighten their daily load. And the Savior would want to know how you and I grow closer to Him and to our Heavenly Father."

The pure love of Christ cannot fail. Everything else will! Thank you to all of those who have shown me what charity really means. Your example has allowed me to see how I myself can be a better example. Just love. That's it.

We had exchanges in Singapore! Remember what exchanges are? It's when you go with a different missionary for a day to receive training and advice on how to improve. I went with Elder Barlow, and my companion Elder Judd went with my previous companion Elder Graham. Singapore is a lot different than east or west Malaysia. There are SO many people. It was good!

Thanks for reading, stay tuned for next week!

Love,

Elder LaRose

WEEK #49 - PI Delivery Guy

Hello everyone!! Masai is the best! The population in percentages goes as follows: 70% Muslim, 20% Chinese, and 10% tamel (indians). Somewhere in there are Ibans haha. It is very similar to KL, lots of terraces and apartments, but not as much malls though.

Behind me is Singapore!

For pday last week we were able to go ice-skating!!! It was really fun. I had some of the workers there help me do some fancy tricks and stops. I had some good falls though.

In the morning we do something called personal study. We have an hour in the morning to study the scriptures, read a missionary guide called "Preach My Gospel, " or study the words of our living prophet and leaders! During our personal Study, we get a call from this random number. We answer the phone call and it is this random guy speaking really really fast and mumbled Malay. He asked us if we remembered him. He said he wanted to meet us today. We said sure!! So we waited for him anxiously at the church, expecting he would be this really prepared guy to hear the gospel (because to be honest, who calls the Elders and sets up an appointment with them? Normally it's the other way around!) The man said he arrived. We go outside and see the.... Bicycle Delivery Guy!!!! My bike was shipped from Miri to Masai, and apparently had arrived that day. So our "really prepared and elect" man turns out to be the sweet old bicycle deliverer. It was a good laugh!!!

Free bananas in our helmets!!

On Friday we went out to a place called kota Masai, around an hour bike ride if you are going fast. When we got there, we stopped by a members house to see how they were doing. When we went to hop back on our bikes, Elder Judd got a flat tire. Some drunk guy who lives with the members offered to fix the flat. So we let him do some red-neck repairs. It was too late to wait for the tire to be fixed, so we took a taxi home.

The next morning on Friday we went back to the members house and Elder Judd's bike still had a flat. It was a valiant effort from the kind drunk man haha. Friday was Hari Raya. Hari Raya is a Muslim holiday, in which they celebrate the end of their fasting period. For one month, every day, they fast from sunrise until sunset. Today was the last day, so basically all the stores were closed-including the bicycle shops! We had to call another member to take us back home. It was a nightmare!!

The La-ROSE

This past Sunday was a really cool day. We met with one of our investigators named Sibat. We met him at the pasar malam, where we were giving out pictures of Jesus Christ. He says he wants to find the right path of God and wants to receive forgiveness from his sins. We explained that only through Jesus Christ can we be baptized! We then helped him understand that power of the priesthood (that authority from God) was lost, and no one could be forgiven from their sins. We invited him to be baptized on August 4th. Really exciting! God works with righteous desires :)
 Elder Judd!

We didn't have any plans for the rest of the night, so we called one of our PIs (potential investigators) named Ericson and we said, "can you meet in twenty minutes?" He said ya!
As we were walking over to his house, guess who we saw!? Wilson and Liya!! They were also potensial Investigators. We set up an appointment for Tuesday. We came back to the church and has a wonderful lesson with Ericson. He too was wanting to be baptized and to follow God's path, not just a good path. There are many good paths out there in the world, but which is God's path?

Companionship study on the playground

It was a good week! I would encourage you all to find the tender mercies of the day. More gratitude in your life means more God in your life.

Have a great week, love you all so much

Love,

Elder LaRose

WEEK #48 - Movin' to Masai

Hey Yall! Sorry I didn't send out an email last week, it was a crazy p-day!

Transfer news came out!! Guess what's happening?? I am going to Masai!! Masai. Johor Baru!! Its in West Malaysia. It is the only place in West Malaysia that has Ibans!!! It's so exciting!! My companion is going to be Elder Judd, I came out with him in the mission!!

Tuesday was one of the hardest days of my mission and one of the best!! We woke up at 5:45am to take Elder Schindler to the airport. He was the Chinese Elder serving in Miri. He is one of the greatest missionaries I know. It was tough saying goodbye. I know his legacy will live on!

The best trio in the world!!

Afterwards we were heading home to get ready for the day. I might've left my little briefcase at the church, so I asked Brother Simon (the member taking us) if he could stop by the church. When we got there, Brother Inging as his family were there. Sister Barama, Linda, Lydia, Brother Sumob and his wife all are going to the Temple! We saw someone riding towards us on a bicycle. As it got closer, Elder Bennion asked, "Elder LaRose, is that your bike?" I looked up and saw it was my bike!!! I got out of the car (while it was still rolling up to the Church gate) and chased the man. When I got to him, I just took him down. :) We both landed on the grass on the side of the road. He took off running, so I picked up my bike, hopping on it, and got after him. The chain came off when I talked him, so Elder Bennion took off running after him. He got close to the man and the man stopped. Brother Ingin came running to help us. Turns out, the man sold Elder Bennion bike to someone. He sold it for 12 dollars haha. What are you going to do with 12 dollars? Elder Bennion's bike was worth 250$. The man wasn't all the way there, so we felt kinda bad for him. But hey, I GOT MY BIKE BACK!! With a little wrestling involved ;)

 I got my bike back!!!

Getting the bike back isn't even the coolest part of the story. God's handprints were all over this situation!!!! Here's how:

1st miracle: Transfer news came out, and I'm leaving Miri. I called the Masai Elders and they said they have a nice bike shop over there. It would just make more sense to buy a bike over there. Elder Schindler needed to pack, so I stayed with him while Elder Bennion and Elder Tan went to bargain to buy Elder Bennion a new bike. He bought a really nice one!

On Monday, we go and print pictures for those we are saying goodbye to. So I printed out some pictures for Elder Schindler. I put them in my scripture case (the little briefcase I was talking about earlier).

On Monday night, Elder Bennion and I had a lesson at the church. When we got back home, I realized I forgot my briefcase at the church. I set a reminder on my phone to pick it up at the church so I could give Elder Schindler his pictures.

The next morning when we got to the airport, I realized I forgot the pictures!! I am seriously soooo forgetful. Sorry mom, things still haven't changed. :D

Anyways we were heading back from the airport, and I remembered about the briefcase. I told Brother Simon to stop by the church. Elder Bennion said we don't need to stop by the church, because we have district meeting later on at the church, so we could just grab the briefcase then. I still wanted to get my briefcase before District Meeting.

If we didn't stop at the church I would've not seen the guy. We literally arrived at the church the same time the man was passing by. We were suppose to leave the house by 6:30am, but Brother Simon was late. Hadn't he been late, I wouldn't have gotten my bike back.

Brother Ingin was actually heading overseas for work THAT DAY. He wouldn't have been able to help us if that scene happened 5-10 minutes later. ALSO, I was sitting on the right side of the car. If I was on the left side, maybe I wouldn't have seen him.

How could one not acknowledge God's hand in that story? I cannot deny that there wasn't some type of divine help. I am so grateful for Heavenly Father and his caring way to help His children.

This is definitely one of the tops stories of my mission! What if all my wrestling and training was meant for that one moment to takle the theif? Never know...

Hey everyone, do you remember my packing problems?? I have a hard time packing and fitting everything while still being overweight. I convince myself it is going to be easier to pack every new transfer, but it actually gets harder. I went to bed at 5am. Yep. It's bad. I know. It's really bad. I have faith though, one day I will learn how to pack. I really, really hope.

Saying goodbye to The "mission mansion" in Miri.
The path to Brother Taha's house!
The topic for District Meeting was, "Be Bold for the Gold."

Alma chapter 38 verse 12 says to "use boldness, but not overbearence." Not being overbearing doesn't mean to be less bold, it means to be bold with love!!

The greatest act of love was the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The greatest sign of love is the invitation to repent. That is why God tells us to repent so much!!! It's so that we can become like Him faster!!!

We had a discussion about this question:
"What are the two most important days in our life?"

The two most important days are when we were born, and when we figured out why we were born. It's like a mission! The two most important days are when we arrive in our mission, and when we arrive ON our mission. There is a difference!!
This is the biggest Pau in the world (Chinese steamed chicken bun)

I arrived in Masai!!!!! It is very similar to Cheras, but the population is about 90% Muslim, 8% Chinese, and 2% Iban and other Sarawakians. So we really have to have the Spirit with us when we try and find, or we just work with our members to find their friends! It is a great area.

We met with Brother Taha! It was really exciting because I served with Sister Taha in Miri for 5 months! So I felt like I already knew him and his family.

This is Brother Taha! I served with her daughter Sister Taha in Miri!

Do you know what a pasar malam is? It is when a bunch of people set up tents and sell a lot of things. Food, clothes, bags, anything! So, guess what we did? We set up our own stand!! We gave out free pictures of Jesus Christ and gave out copies of the Book of Mormon. It was really really fun! There were some cool people who were really interested.

This is the pasar malam!! When in doubt, hand out pictures of Jesus!

See where my packing skills got adopted into this picture?? Haha.

Church was the best! There were about 15 people came! It is a really small branch, but the members are really strong and have amazing testimonies. I am looking forward to serving in this area. It has a lot of potential. Elder Judd is a really good companion. His voice sounds like someone who introduces General Conference. It is very deep and soothing hahaha.
Elder Chngh came to visit!!!! He was my trainer!!!

Sorry, this was a long email! Can't wait to talk to y'all next week!!

Love,

Elder LaRose
